Northridge CA

Introduction

Northridge California has recently started making a name for itself in the national scene. As a large college town for a commuter school, the blend of students and residents is unique.

The Northridge Earthquake

This is the thing, unfortunately, for which Northridge California is most famous. The devastation from the morning of January 17, 1994 at 4:31 am will never be forgotten by those who lived through it. Registering 7.3 on the Richter scale, people were jarred out of bed, buildings were twisted, freeways collapsed and many people who lived in the San Fernando Valley were shaken for weeks after. Some people even moved away from Los Angeles and Southern California altogether.

Amazingly, the recovery was swift. Under the leadership of Mayor Richard Riordan (owner of the landmark "Pantry Cafe" downtown), freeways were rebuilt and buildings were "red tagged" quickly and then replaced.

Northridge Fashion Center

Long considered the mall in the north San Fernando Valley, the Northridge Fashion Center (or NFC) is now an upscale and hip place to shop. It suffered major damage after the Northridge Quake, and as a result, had a huge effort to not only repair it, but to really turn it into a place to shop, see movies and be a trendy hot spot.

From a good map of Northridge, you can see that it's about halfway between Santa Clarita and Los Angeles, smack dab in the center of the San Fernando Valley. It's near Granada Hills, Van Nuys, North Hills, Chatsworth, Sylmar, and not far from Calabasas, Woodland Hills, Sherman Oaks and Pasadena and Glendale.

Cal State University Northridge - CSUN

CSUN (pronounced "SEE-sun") is the former San Fernando Valley State, and is the Valley's biggest university. It is the home of one of the nation's top business schools, particularly the Economics Department. The Matador major sports teams rather suck, though the Cal State Northridge baseball team has turned out s phi delt flag ome fine players over the years. As far as campus life, there is practically none. People drive to class and then drive home. The only chance for involvement and interaction with other students is to join a sorority or fraternity, such as the award-winning Cal Zeta chapter of Phi Delta Theta at Northridge State.
