Speeding up Network Connections

There are ways to make your cable or DSL connection faster. They require changes to your registry, and depend on your operating system. If you don't know what I'm talking about, I strongly suggest you back up your registry and check out pages like SpeedGuide.net.

These work for me on my Windows 2000 setup...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

• GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize - 372300 (others will work... 256960 and 65535 are also popular)
• TcpWindowSize - same as GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize
• Tcp1323Opts - 3, though some believe 1 is better
• TcpMaxDupAcks - 2 (?)
• MaxDupAcks - 3
• SackOpts - 1
• DefaultTTL - 128, though some believe 64 and 32 are also ok
• EnablePMTUDiscovery - 1
• EnablePMTUBHDetect - 0
• PMTUDiscovery - 0 (?)

Finally, in the following key, you'll want to find the adapter listing that contains your NIC card settings. It often is the biggest and most detailed key with subkey info.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<pick one>

Once you find it, add:

MTU - 1500

Of course, rebooting is usually required for this stuff to take effect.
